The Internet, ways of using it, the reasons behind internet usage and other data about the online world were part of the survey conducted by IDRA Research & Consulting.
This study is back after the first wave conducted in 2016 and it reveals some interesting trends in the development of this sector in the Albanian territory.
There are 63% of Albanians who claim to use the Internet, unlike two years ago, where only 49% of them declared themselves as users. Significant increase of 10 percentage points in Internet usage is observed in rural areas.
Smartphones display an even quicker spread-out. In 2016 only 40% of them claimed to have a smartphone, and two years later, 64% of the respondents claimed to own one.
The number of people who have a home Internet connection is also increasing, from 37% in 2016 to 44% in 2018. Compared to the above trend of Internet users or those who own a smartphone, home Internet connection is lower, due to the fast and low cost of mobile internet offered in the country.
Turning to the reasons why Albanians use the Internet, we find no surprises:
The highest percentage of daily internet usage is to become part of social networks (59%) followed by use for calls or video calls (38%) and to download, watch or listen to music and movies (24%).
The interesting fact is that Internet usage in Albania exceeds 10 percentage points on the world average – 63% of the population in Albania are Internet user versus the world population average which is only 53%.
This survey was conducted with a national representative sample of 2000 respondents using face to face survey. The margin of error for this survey is + – 2.2% with a confidence interval of 95%.
